”Once walking through the twisted little streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong, I came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were displayed samples of the tattoos available. On the chest or arms you could have tattooed an anchor or flag or mermaid or whatever. But what struck me with force was three words that could be tattooed on one’s flesh, ‘Born to Lose.’ I entered the shop in astonishment and, pointing to those words and asked the Chinese tattoo artist, “Does anyone really have that terrible phrase, Born to Lose, tattooed on his body?” He replied, “Yes, sometimes.” “The Chinese man simply tapped his forehead and in broken English said, ‘Before tattoo on body, tattoo on mind.’”
The tattoo artist’s statement is brilliant. His words teach us the power of our thoughts.
When the Lord gave me a new name two years ago, I decided to embrace it by getting a tattoo for my 41st birthday. Getting a tattoo was like sealing the deal that I was a warrior. You see, I didn’t believe I had it in me. The Lord had to develop my confidence and character “before tattoo on body, tattoo on mind.”
This week’s mindset is a question, “What tattoos reside in your mind?” What beliefs do you have about who you are and who God is? What we think about ourselves is of utmost importance and our beliefs about God are even more critical.
Just as tattoos originate in our mind, then in our body, so do our actions. What we think about will become behavior. It’s critical we look at our underlying beliefs, so they don’t take up negative root. The good news is that negative views of ourselves or others are never permanent. God’s blood washes it all clean.
Think about the coming week. What is one truth, from the Word of God, that you will tattoo on your mind? Share in the comments below.
